CLERMONT, FL - After mustering just two hits in a game one loss to Shippensburg, the IUP softball team bounced back with a big win over Slippery Rock to split a pair of games at the National Training Center (NTC) Spring Games Tuesday in Florida.

SHIPPENSBURG 12, IUP 0 (5 Innings)

The Crimson Hawks were unable to overcome a 10 run Lady Raider second inning, falling to Shippensburg 12-0 in five innings in game one.

Emily Estep was fantastic in the circle for the Raiders, surrendering just two hits in a five-inning shutout win. IUP threatened in the first when Christi Mauk (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel) singled up the middle and advanced to scoring position just a batter later, but the Crimson Hawks were unable to gain an early advantage.

Shippensburg would post a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, and 10 runs in the second to take a commanding 12-0 lead after just two innings. The Lady Raiders tallied eight hits in the inning.

Mauk and Brooke Green (Gettysburg/Gettysburg) were the only Crimson Hawks with hits in game one, while Jessie Trammell went 2-for-2 with three RBI for Shippensburg.

IUP 9, SLIPPERY ROCK 3

After Slippery Rock jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Crimson Hawks posted seven runs in the bottom-half of the inning to take a commanding lead after one.

Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) got the inning started with a single that plated a pair of runs, while Amanda Segrist (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) and Meghan Carney (Corry/Corry) both worked walks with the bases loaded to make it 5-1. Mauk polished off the big inning with a single that scored two more runs.

IUP would tack on insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth when Jen Beaver (Chester Springs/Owen J. Roberts) smacked a triple that plated Stef Poates (Yorktown, VA/Grafton). Beaver would come around to score on a Stefanie McCoy (New Paris/Chestnut Ridge) groundout just moments later.

Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) was excellent for the Crimson Hawks in game two, allowing just three runs and striking out two in a complete game win. Beaver finished with a triple and two runs scored, while Mauk tallied a pair of hits.

The Crimson Hawks are back in action tomorrow against the New York Institute of Technology and Minnesota Duluth. Game one against NYIT is scheduled for 9:00 a.m., while first pitch with Minnesota Duluth is set for 1:00 p.m.
