Crimson Hawks Sweep Thursday Doubleheader in Florida

Alexa Campbell's oustanding day in the circle propelled IUP to a win in game two
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, FL - Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) tossed a complete game shutout in game two as the IUP softball team notched a pair of wins at the National Training Center (NTC) Spring Games Thursday. The Crimson Hawks hung on for a 5-4 win over Slippery Rock in game one before downing Merrimack 8-0 in the afternoon session.

IUP 5, SLIPPERY ROCK 4

The Crimson Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead on an RBI single from Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) in the first and a Stef Poates (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) solo home run in the third, but the Rock would punch back with runs in the fourth and fifth to knot it at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the frame.

The game would not stay tied for long, however, as the Crimson Hawk would post three runs in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. Jen Beaver (Chester Springs/Owen J. Roberts) got the scoring started with an RBI double, while Ashley Strack (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) plated two more with a single that scored Beaver and Mary Ward (Hatfield/North Penn).

Slippery Rock would post runs in the sixth and seventh to pull within one, but Campbell would stimy any hopes of a Rock comeback. Campbell allowed just one run in two innings of relief, while Tara Senn (Eagle/Downington East) gave up just two runs on five hits in five innings and earned the win.

Strack finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI, while Beaver, Poates and Mitchell all had runs batted in for the Crimson Hawks.

IUP 8, MERRIMACK 0

A pitcher's duel for six innings, game two turned out to be anything but in an 8-0 IUP win. The Crimson Hawks posted all eight runs in the top of the seventh to obliterate six innings of scoreless action.

Meghan Carney (Corry/Corry) and Stefanie McCoy (New Paris/Chestnut Ridge) each had RBI singles in the inning, while Mitchell smacked a single to right that plated Carney and McCoy. Strack continued her hot day with an RBI double to round out the scoring.

Campbell was absolutely fantastic in the circle for the Crimson Hawks, allowing just six hits in a complete game shutout. The sophomore did not walk a batter, and struck out five in the win.

The Crimson Hawks wrap up the NTC Spring Games tomorrow evening with a doubleheader against Indiana Tech. Game one is set for 5:00 p.m., while first pitch in game two is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
