MILLERSVILLE, PA -
Jordan Giannini (Latrobe/Greater Latrobe)'s game-winning RBI single in game two helped the IUP baseball team to a Saturday split with Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East rival Millersville at Marauder Park. With the split, the Crimson Hawks take the weekend series 3-1.
MILLERSVILLE 13, IUP 0
The Marauders (14-8) dominated from the opening pitch in game one, posting five runs in the first innings thanks to a pair of two-RBI doubles from Zach Stone and Tyler McDonald.
Leading 7-0 in the sixth, Millersville would tack on four more runs in the inning and two in the seventh to take game one 13-0. Chris Murphy was excellent on the hill for the Marauders, allowing just four hits in a complete game shutout victory.
Demetrius Christofes (Grantville/Lower Dauphin) got the start for IUP and suffered the loss, while reliever
Jared Weed (Washington Crossing/Council Rock North) allowed just two earned runs in 4.2 innings of work.
Stone finished 3-for-4 with four RBI for Millersville, while
Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge),
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown), Giannini and
Austin Mock (State College/State College) all had hits for the Crimson Hawks.
IUP 2, MILLERSVILLE 1
Kyle Zaorski (Reading/Muhlenberg) allowed just one earned run on four hits and struck out 12 in a complete game win as IUP earned a 2-1 win in game two.
Zaorski's only blemish on the afternoon came in the top of the first inning, when Jeff Heisey singled to left to score Jeremy Musser and give the Marauders a 1-0 lead.
The Millersville advantage would hold until the bottom of the fifth until
Jordan DeLuca (Broad Top/Tussey Mountain) knocked in the tying run with a sacrifice fly that scored Mock. IUP would complete the comeback in the sixth when Giannini plated
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys) with a single to left.
The one run lead would be more than enough for Zaorski, who retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to lock up his first win of the season.
Troy Foster (Shamong, NJ/Seneca) went 2-for-3 for the Crimson Hawks (11-8) in game two, while Giannini and DeLuca had IUP's only runs batted in. Jim McDade toed the slab for Millersville in game two and surrendered both runs, while Adam Zipko pitched a clean sixth inning in relief.
The Crimson Hawks will travel to Shippensburg Tuesday for a single game beginning at 3:00 p.m. before taking on Mercyhurst in a four-game set next weekend.
