ERIE, PA -
Brett Quiggle (Weedville/St. Marys) allowed just one earned runs in 5.2 innings on the mound in game two, but the IUP baseball team was unable to overcome a pair of big innings in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West rival Mercyhurst Saturday.
MERCYHURST 4, IUP 0
Locked in a scoreless tie heading into the sixth, Mercyhurst posted four runs on five hits in the inning to take game one 4-0. The runs were charged to starter
Kyle Zaorski (Reading/Muhlenberg), who struck out three and allowed just four hits in five scoreless innings before the Lakers broke through.
Jon Klein was excellent on the bump for Mercyhurst (18-11, 4-4 PSAC West), giving up just four hits in a complete game shutout. Brendan Cox got the scoring started for the Lakers with an RBI single to third, while Jake Marinelli broke it up with a triple that plated a pair of runs.
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) was the only Crimson Hawk to notch multiple hits in game one, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) went 1-for-3 with a double, while
Austin Mock (State College/State College) had IUP's only other hit.
MERCYHURST 5, IUP 4
The sixth inning would once again doom the Crimson Hawks in game two, as the Lakers scored four runs in the inning to erase a three-run deficit and defeat IUP 5-4.
After trading runs in the first, the Crimson Hawks would use their own big inning to take a commanding 4-1 lead in the fifth. IUP tallied three runs in the frame thanks to a
Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge) single that scored two runs and a
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys) RBI double.
The Lakers would respond in a big way, however, scoring four unearned runs in the top of the sixth to regain the lead and steal momentum away from the Crimson Hawks. Mercyhurst scored all four runs with two outs after a fielding error extended the inning.
IUP (12-10, 1-3 PSAC West) looked mount a rally in the sixth and seventh innings, but Tanner Delahoy tossed a pair of hitless innings in relief to wrap up the win for the Lakers. Matthew Jiminez got the win for Mercyhurst, giving up four runs in five innings of work.
Quiggle took the loss for the Crimson Hawks, but was charged with just one earned run in 5.2 innings on the hill. Uhl powered IUP at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Zinsmeister went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
The Crimson Hawks return home Tuesday to host Mansfield in a doubleheader from Dougherty Field. Game one is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m., while first pitch in game two is set for 3:30 p.m.
