INDIANA, PA – The Crimson Hawks tallied 11 extra base hits and gave up just two runs as they swept Clarion on Saturday, winning 12-2 and 10-0 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West baseball doubleheader at Dougherty Field.
The Crimson Hawks had 29 hits on the day, including seven doubles, two triples and two homeruns. Three IUP pitchers combined to give up just 12 hits and strike out 18 Golden Eagles as the Crimson Hawks scored a pair of 10-run wins.
With the victories IUP improves to 18-13 overall and 4-6 in the PSAC West while Clarion drops to 1-25 and 1-13.
The first win of the day gave Head Coach
Jeff Ditch 183 for his career, breaking IUP's all-time mark formerly held by Arch Moore.
Stephen Cooke (Severn, MD/Archbishop Curley) picked up the win in the opener as he improved to 6-1 on the year. He struck out seven batters and gave up eight hits and two earned runs in six innings of work. The reigning Division II national pitcher of the week had his scoreless innings streak come to an end in the fourth, going 32.2 consecutive innings without giving up a run.
IUP put four on the board in the first, getting a sacrifice fly from
Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge) after a
Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) leadoff triple and a three-run double by
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown).
Three more runs came in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run homer off the bat of
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys), his third of the season.
Clarion did its damage in the fourth with two runs on four hits, but kept the bases loaded when Cooke rallied for strikeout to end the inning.
The Crimson Hawks scored twice more in the fifth and three times in the sixth, getting RBI base knocks from Tice and Lupia and a sacrifice fly from
Austin Mock (State College/State College).
Jared Weed (Washington Crossing/Council Rock North) entered for Cooke in the seventh, tossing a scoreless inning.
In game two IUP scored all 10 runs in the first four innings, including four in the second.
RBI singles from Tice and
Brett Quiggle (Weedville/St. Marys) highlighted the first inning while a run-scoring triple by Zinsmeister came in the second.
Quiggle hit his second homerun of the season in the third and had another RBI single in the fourth while Uhl smashed a run-scoring double and
Jordan DeLuca (Broad Top/Tussey Mountain) had a sacrifice fly.
Zambanini went the distance for the Crimson Hawks on the mound, improving to 6-1 with a three-hit shutout. He struck out 10 and walked four in seven innings.
Quiggle finished 5-for-7 on the day with a double, homerun and three RBI. Zinsmeister went 5-for-8 with two triples and a double, knocking in a run and scoring four.
Troy Foster (Shamong, NJ/Seneca) and Lupia each had four hits while Tice and Mock had three apiece. Lupia and Tice each drove in four and Uhl scored four times and brought around three more runs.
The Crimson Hawks will look to finish off the series with another sweep tomorrow as they host the Golden Eagles in a doubleheader at Dougherty Field starting at 1:00 p.m.
