INDIANA, PA – The Crimson Hawks continued with their hot bats and overpowering pitching as they swept another doubleheader with Clarion 10-0 and 14-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Dougherty Field.
IUP put together another solid outing at the plate with a combined 33 hits in the two games, including 13 doubles and four triples. The Golden Eagles managed just 10 hits off of IUP pitchers on the day and struck out a total of 15 times.
The four-game sweep improves IUP to 20-13 overall on the year and 6-6 in PSAC West play while Clarion falls to 1-27 and 1-15.
Kyle Zaorski (Reading/Muhlenberg) picked up the win in game one to improve to 2-3 on the year with a complete game shutout. He gave up just two hits and struck out 10, walking only one in the dominant performance.
The Crimson Hawks scored in five of the seven innings, with four runs coming in the third inning alone. IUP tallied five hits in that inning, including an incredible back-to-back-to-back triples from
Jordan DeLuca (Broad Top/Tussey Mountain),
Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) and
Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge).
In game two,
Brett Quiggle (Weedville/St. Marys) started on the hill and combined with
Jared Weed (Washington Crossing/Council Rock North) to allow eight hits and one earned run, striking out five and walking just one. Quiggle picked up the win, his first of the year.
IUP scored in each of the first five innings, including four runs in the second and three each in the third, fourth and fifth. The Crimson Hawks racked up 19 hits in the game from 10 different players, including seven doubles and a triple.
Several IUP batters had a successful day, including
Austin Mock (State College/State College) who went 4-for-7 with three doubles and four RBI.
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys) finished with six hits while
John Beatty (New Castle/Mohawk) had four hits, including two doubles, and drove in three runs.
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) finished 5-for-8 with three RBI and Zinsmeister had two triples, a double, and scored three runs.
Now back in business in the PSAC West race and on a six-game winning streak, the Crimson Hawks will face Bloomsburg from the East on Tuesday home doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
