INDIANA, PA – For the second season in a row, the IUP softball team's matchup with bitter Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central rival Bloomsburg will be anything but hostile, as the Crimson Hawks hold their annual Cancer Benefit Day to raise money for Heather's Haven.
Fans entering Podbielski Field on Thursday can stop by the information table for more on the mission of Heather's Haven, or purchase a commemorative t-shirt for $15. During the games, members of the IUP athletic community will be collecting donations, and selling Heather's Haven bracelets.
Heather's Haven is a non-profit program that is dedicated to helping children and their families who are battling cancer by providing them with camping experiences, year-round events and activities, and giving them support through groups and networks, which will allow them to know they are never alone long after their camping experience has ended.
The program was created in memory of Heather Miller, an 11-year-old girl who passed after a long battle with Ewing's Sarcoma on January 29, 2010. Heather's Haven hopes to provide children and their families battling cancer the ability to create memories and enjoy time away from the day-to-day routine of battling this disease.
In 2012, “Heaven Sent: The Heather Miller Story” was authored by Scott Brown and Wendy Miller. The book chronicles the life and journey of Heather and her family. The story highlights the IUP softball team's fundraising efforts, and had sold over 3,500 copies in the past year.
During Thursday's games, the authors will be on hand to sell and sign copies of the book. First pitch in game one with the Huskies is set for 2:30 p.m. at Podbielski Field.
