WHEELING, WV – The Crimson Hawks put together a pair of late inning rallies to help them to 2-1 and 5-4 wins as IUP swept Wheeling Jesuit in non-conference softball action on Tuesday afternoon.
Down 1-0 with one out in the sixth inning,
Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) smacked an RBI double, scoring both
Mary Ward (Hatfield/North Penn) and
Rachel Francis (Jefferson, OH/Jefferson) to put the Crimson Hawks on top 2-1.
In the bottom half of the inning, Wheeling Jesuit put two in scoring position with two outs but IUP starter
Tara Senn (Eagle/Downington East) forced a ground out to second to end the threat. The Cardinals again put two runners on in the seventh but Senn continued her clutch pitching with another ground out to end the game.
Senn improved to 10-5 in the complete game victory, striking out four while scattering eight hits.
In the nightcap, Wheeling Jesuit held a 3-0 lead heading into the fifth, allowing just four IUP hits. But that's when Ward started the rally for the Crimson Hawks, following a leadoff single by Francis with a homerun over the fence in centerfield to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
Four batters later with two on and one out,
Angela Devereaux (Oakdale/West Allegheny) singled to center, bringing in Mitchell to tie the game. Stef McCoy followed that with another RBI single as
Allison Viguers (West Chester/West Chester East) came across to give the Crimson Hawks a 4-3 lead.
IUP added an insurance run in the seventh on a pinch hit, two-out RBI single to center by
Christi Mauk (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel), scoring McCoy from third to make it 5-3.
Wheeling Jesuit tried to pull their own rally in the bottom half, putting two runners in scoring position with one out. A groundout to shortstop scored one but McCoy, who in the circle in relief, got the final out of the game on an infield pop out.
McCoy tossed the final four innings in game two, giving up four hits and two earned runs. Senn started and went the first three innings, also giving up four hits and two earned.
Devereaux went 3-for-4 with an RBI and McCoy went 2-for-2 at the plate.
The Crimson Hawks, now 20-11 on the year, will host PSAC Central Division rival Bloomsburg in an important doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Podbielski Field.
