Box Score
SHIPPENSBURG, PA -
Brett Quiggle (Weedville/St. Marys) went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored as the IUP baseball team coasted to an 11-3 win at Shippensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover action Tuesday.
The Crimson Hawks used a pair of four-run innings in the second and fifth to jump out to a commanding 8-2 lead after five. The six run advantage would be more than enough for relievers
Jared Weed (Washington Crossing/Council Rock North) and
Justin Charles (Dillsburg/Northern York), who combined to allow just one earned run on four hits in four innings.
Matt Szukics (Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley) toed the rubber to start the game and notched the win, surrendering just two earned runs on six hits in five innings of work. The senior fanned four Raiders on the afternoon and did not walk a batter.
Trailing by a run after the first,
Austin Mock (State College/State College) got the scoring started in the second with an RBI single that plated
Troy Foster (Shamong, NJ/Seneca), before Quiggle followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to give the Crimson Hawks a 2-1 lead. Mock would score later in the frame on a Shippensburg error, and
Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) would give IUP a 4-1 lead with an RBI double to left center.
After a Zinsmeister RBI single in the fourth gave the Crimson Hawks a 5-1 lead,
David McNeill (Pittsburgh/Our Lady of Sacred Heart) would kickstart another rally in the fifth with an RBI single to make it 6-1. IUP would tack on two more runs when Quiggle smacked a single up that middle that scored McNeill and
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys), and Zinsmeister would once again wrap up the scoring with his third RBI of the game on a groundout to second.
Zinsmeister went 2-for-5 with a walk and three RBI at the plate, while Quiggle finished 3-for-4 with a trio of runs batted in and two runs scored. Foster went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and runs scored, and McNeill tallied three hits, an RBI and three runs scored.
Michael Douglas went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in and a pair of runs scored, while Jimmy Spanos went 2-for-4 for the Raiders. Kyle McClintock took the loss on the mound, giving up six earned runs on six hits in four innings. The loss drops Shippensburg drops Shippensburg to 17-9 on the season, while IUP improves to 13-10 with the win.
The Crimson Hawks are set to begin a weekend series with PSAC West foe Gannon this Friday in Erie, before returning home on Saturday for a twinbill with the Golden Knights beginning at 1:00 p.m.
