INDIANA, PA –
Brett Quiggle (Weedville/St. Marys) blasted two homeruns and
Jordan DeLuca (Broad Top/Tussey Mountain) provided late game heroics with a squeeze play to end the nightcap as the Crimson Hawks scored a much needed sweep of Lock Haven on Friday afternoon at Dougherty Field.
IUP took game one 4-2 and game two 8-7.
Quiggle went 4-for-4 in game two with six RBI, including a three-run round tripper in the first inning. He added a solo shot in the third, a run-scoring single in the fifth and an RBI double in the sixth.
Game two went into the seventh all knotted up at 7-7. Lock Haven was able to put together two hits but
Matt Szukics (Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley), who was pitching in relief, was able to get out of the jam without any runners coming across the plate.
After a fly out to start the bottom of the seventh,
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys) drew a walk before a
John Beatty (New Castle/Mohawk) single put runners on the corners for IUP. Still with an out to play with, the Crimson Hawks called for a bunt as DeLuca dropped a perfect one down the first base line, surprising the Bald Eagles while Uhl came across the plate uncontested for the win.
The squeeze followed a back-and-forth game that featured three lead changes and two ties, the last of which coming in the sixth inning after Quiggle's RBI double down the right field line scored DeLuca to make it 7-7.
Kyle Zambanini (Jerome/Conemaugh Twp.) got the start and the no decision for IUP, giving up seven hits and seven earned runs in 5.1 innings. Szukics went the final 1.2 innings, giving up four hits and walking one but didn't allow a runner to cross the plate.
The Crimson Hawks had to rally in the first game as well with Lock Haven taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning. IUP got one back in the bottom half on a Beatty RBI double and tied the game in the third with run-scoring single by Quiggle.
A sacrifice fly off the bat of
Austin Mock (State College/State College) in the fifth gave IUP the lead at 3-2 and in the sixth
Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge) singled up the middle, scoring pinch-running
Hunter Bigler (Washington/Trinity) from second.
Stephen Cooke (Severn, MD/Archbishop Curley) picked up a complete game win for the Crimson Hawks, striking out eight and giving up eight hits. He improves to 8-1 on the year.
With the wins the Crimson Hawks move past Lock Haven in the PSAC West standings, improving to 9-9 in the division (23-20 overall) while the Bald Eagles drop to 8-10 (14-23). IUP still remains on the outside of the PSAC playoff picture, two games back of Slippery Rock, which swept division-leading California earlier today.
The Crimson Hawks finish up the weekend series with Lock Haven tomorrow on the road. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
