LOCK HAVEN, PA –
Brett Quiggle (Weedville/St. Marys) had the game-winning RBI single in game one and picked up the win in relief in game two as IUP swept Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West baseball action on Saturday afternoon.
The doubleheader sweep was the second straight for the Crimson Hawks over Lock Haven as they won all four during the weekend.
With the victories IUP improves to 25-20 overall and 11-9 in the PSAC West, tied with Slippery Rock for the final conference playoff spot. Lock Haven drops to 14-25 overall and 8-12 in the division.
Quiggle finished the day 3-for-8 at the plate with three RBI and threw the final three innings of the day, allowing two hits and no runs to improve to 2-3 on the year.
IUP held a 1-0 lead in game one before the Bald Eagles knocked in three runs in the third to pull ahead. The Crimson Hawks tacked on a run in the fourth and sixth on sacrifice fly outs from
John Beatty (New Castle/Mohawk) and
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys), tying the score at 3-3.
Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) led off the seventh with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge). He then moved to third on another groundout before scoring on Quiggle's two-out hit.
Kyle Zaorski (Reading/Muhlenberg) picked up the complete game win, improving to 3-4 after striking out five and giving up five hits in seven innings.
The Bald Eagles got on the scoreboard first in the nightcap, putting two runs on the board in the third and two more in the sixth to take a commanding 4-0 lead heading into the final inning.
That's when The Crimson Hawks put their rally caps on, starting with a leadoff walk from
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) followed by back-to-back doubles from
Austin Mock (State College/State College) and Beatty to make it a 4-2 game with no outs. Uhl drew a walk to put two runners on and three batters later Tice forced an intentional walk to load the bases with two down.
Foster followed that with a single to short, scoring Beatty, before Quiggle brought two around with another late-inning single up the middle to give IUP a 5-4 lead.
Lock Haven tied the score in the bottom half with a one-out RBI double to send the game to extra innings.
Quiggle stepped on the mound for IUP in the eighth, holding Lock Haven scoreless as the Crimson Hawks took a 6-5 lead with an RBI single by
Rick Jones (New Castle/Laurel), scoring
Jordan DeLuca (Broad Top/Tussey Mountain).
The Bald Eagles would put runners on the corners with one out in the bottom half, but Quiggle forced a 643 double play to end the game.
The Crimson Hawks will host Shippensburg in a single nine-inning game on Tuesday before facing rival California in an all-important season-ending series which will help decide the PSAC playoff seedings.
