ERIE, PA – Stephen Cooke (Severn, MD/Archbishop Curley) tossed 11 scoreless innings in the opener to break the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) record with 29.1 consecutive innings without a run to highlight IUP's doubleheader split with Gannon on Friday afternoon.

The Crimson Hawks dropped a 1-0 decision in 14 innings in the opener before coming back with a 4-0 victory in the nightcap.

Cooke entered the day with 18.1 consecutive scoreless innings thrown, dating back to March 15 at Chowan. That spanned a little over two games as he was 3-0 during that span.

The record bests the streak of 27.2 scoreless innings from East Stroudsburg's Jeremy Gigliotti from 2011-2012. Cooke also had a streak of 20.0 innings pitched without a run as a junior.

He was marvelous in the game one start, scattering eight hits and striking out eight while giving up just one walk as he completed 11 scoreless innings. Five times he sat the Golden Knights down 1-2-3 in an inning and got out of tough jams in the eighth and ninth.

In the eighth Gannon put two runners in scoring position with just one out before Cooke forced two straight ground ball outs to keep the game scoreless. In the ninth Gannon again put two runners on with one out but Cooke got another ground ball out and fanned the final batter to end the threat.

The Crimson Hawks had a chance to score in the 11th as Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys) advanced to third with two outs but a ground out ended that threat. In the 13th Brett Quiggle (Weedville/St. Marys) wound up on third after an Austin Mock (State College/State College) single to center but a fly out finished off the IUP inning.

Gannon picked up the win with two outs in the 14th, getting a single before an RBI double ended the game.

Kyle Zaorski (Reading/Muhlenberg) took the loss, throwing the final 2.2 innings and striking out four while giving up three hits and a run. Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge) finished 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles.

In game two the Crimson Hawks struck first when Mock smashed a two-run homerun to left in the top of the second inning. They'd get their other two runs in the fourth with a single to center from Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn), scoring Uhl and Quiggle.

Kyle Zambanini (Jerome/Conemaugh Twp.) continued IUP's impressive pitching performance, throwing the complete game shutout to improve to 5-1 on the year. He scattered five hits in seven innings, striking out three and walking one. Just two runners advanced past second on Zambanini as he tallied three 1-2-3 innings.

Uhl finished 3-for-3 on the day with two runs scored while Zinsmeister collected two hits.

The Crimson Hawks are now 14-11 overall on the year, 2-4 in PSAC West play while Gannon is 13-9 and 7-3.

The two teams wills finish up their weekend series on Sunday with a doubleheader at IUP's Dougherty Field. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
