INDIANA, PA - Tara Senn (Eagle/Downington East) allowed just one earned run in a complete game win in game one and posted another strong performance in the circle in game two as the IUP softball team cruised to a twinbill sweep over Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action Sunday. The Crimson Hawks fended off a late Golden Eagles rally for a 2-1 win in game one, before slugging their way to an 11-3 win in game two.

IUP 2, CLARION 1

Senn was fantastic for the Crimson Hawks (15-8) in game one, scattering just five hits and striking out two in seven innings of work. The freshman did not walk a batter in game one, and allowed her only run of the game on a solo home run by Amanda Gough in the sixth inning.

The IUP offense did its work in the early innings of game one, posting runs in the first and second before being quieted by Clarion hurler Chelsea Zola. Zola allowed the two earned runs on just four hits and fanned four in seven innings in the circle.

Stef Poates (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) would break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the first when she knocked a single to center that scored Christi Mauk (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel), and Mauk would add an RBI of her own in the second when her sacrifice fly to center scored Mary Ward (Hatfield/North Penn). Mauk was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored in game one, while Poates, Ward and Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) had the other IUP hits.

Gough was the only Golden Eagle with multiple hits in game one, going 2-for-3 with the solo shot in the sixth.

IUP 11, CLARION 3 (6 Innings)

The IUP bats woke up in a big way in game two, posting five runs in the first inning to waltz to an 11-3 win in six innings. Senn once again got the win for the Crimson Hawks, surrendering just two earned runs on four hits in four innings. Stef McCoy tossed two innings in relief for IUP and allowed just one run on three hits.

The Crimson Hawks batted around in the first inning and strung together five consecutive hits on their way to a five-run frame. Strack, Ward and Allison Viguers (West Chester/West Chester East) all had RBI hits for the Crimson Hawks, while Jen Beaver (Chester Springs/Owen J. Roberts) capped the big inning with a single to right center that plated two more runs.

IUP would tack on three more runs in the third on another Beaver RBI single and a Kaylee Prendergast (West Chester/Villa Maria Academy) single that scored a pair of runs, but the Golden Eagles would chip away in the fourth. Gough was once again the catalyst for Clarion in game two, smacking a double to right center that score Megan Anderson and trimmed the IUP lead to seven. Gough would scored later in the inning to slice the lead to 8-2.

Gough would once again cross home on a Taylor Powell RBI double in the sixth to make it 8-3 in favor of IUP, but the Crimson Hawks would tally a trio of runs in the sixth to salt away the win via the eight-run rule. Viguers plated a pair of runs in the inning with a double to left field, while Poates locked up the win with an RBI double to right center just one batter later.

Viguers went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored in game two, while Beaver went 2-for-2 with a walk and three runs batted in. Ashley Strack (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Prendergast went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Gough and Nicole Lindner each went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Golden Eagles, while Powell went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jessica Rohaus took the loss in the circle, striking out three in 5.2 innings of work. The loss drops Clarion to 3-10 on the season.

The Crimson Hawks are back on the field this Tuesday when they travel to Greensburg for a doubleheader with Seton Hill. First pitch in game one is set for 2:00 p.m.
