WASHINGTON, PA – The Crimson Hawks got homers from Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys), Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge) and Brett Quiggle (Weedville/St. Marys) in a 9-2 game two victory, helping IUP baseball split its doubleheader at California in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Saturday afternoon.

IUP lost game one 4-3 in eight innings and finishes the season with a 13-11 divisional record, tied with Slippery Rock for the fourth spot in the PSAC West. But due to The Rock's tiebreaker over IUP (a 3-1 series win in April), the Crimson Hawks lose out on the final conference tournament spot in the division as they end their season.

Matt Szukics (Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley) picked up the complete game win in the nightcap, improving to 4-2 on the year after allowing six hits and one earned run, walking one and striking out two.

Uhl got IUP on the board first with a three-run homer in the second inning. That was followed by a Tice RBI single to make it a 4-0 ballgame. California followed in the bottom half with a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1 after two.

Tice gave the Crimson Hawks their second homer of the game with a solo shot in the fifth to make it 5-1. They tacked on four more in the sixth, highlighted by Quiggle's three-run home run to go on top 9-1. The Vulcans added one more in the sixth and put two on in the seventh but Szukics forced a two-out ground out to clinch the win.

It was a back-and-forth game one, with both teams putting a run on the board in the first. California took a 2-1 lead in the third on an run-scoring single but an RBI base hit from Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) in the fifth tied the game back up at 2-2.

The Vulcans took a 3-2 lead in the bottom half on another RBI single only to have the Crimson Hawks rally again in the sixth as Rick Jones (New Castle/Laurel) forced a bases loaded walk to tie the game at 3-3.

California threatened to end it in the seventh, putting two runners in scoring position with no outs but starter Kyle Zaorski (Reading/Muhlenberg) got A.J. Robinson to strike out looking on a 3-2 pitch to send the game to extra innings.

It was in the eighth that California got the other end of a bases loaded walk when Demetrius Christofes (Grantville/Lower Dauphin) forced in a run with two outs to give the Vulcans the win.

Uhl went a combined 4-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored on the day. Tice also collected four hits and scored twice while Quiggle added three hits and Jones and Zinsmeister each had two.

The Crimson Hawks end their season with a 27-23 overall record.
