Soccer's Matchup with Mansfield Ends in a Draw

Box Score

MANSFIELD, PA – For the second straight game, the women's soccer team found themselves playing in overtime, this time ending in a tie against Mansfield.

The game was scoreless for a majority of the first half with IUP fighting off five Mansfield shots in the first 23 minutes of play. The Crimson Hawks first shot did not come until the 25 minute mark.

Tori Pickur, who entered the game in the 15th minute of play, breathed some life into the Crimson Hawks. Pickur strung together three shots before finally scoring in the 36th minute from eight yards out, putting IUP up 1-0. The goal was her first of the season.

To start off the second half, the Mountaineers rattled off shots until a penalty kick by Karyn Anselmo tied the game at 1-1. The goal came in the 49th minute and was her first goal of the season.

The Crimson Hawks came fighting back when Michelle Grozinsky (Waldorf, MD/North Point) was able to put them up 2-1 with a header from five yards out in the 60th minute. Grozinsky's goal was also her first of the season, and came off of an assist by Haily Emrick (Clarksville, MD/River Hill).

Down 2-1, Mansfield started to grind their way back into the game with their defense holding IUP to just two more shots in regulation time. It looked as if the Crimson Hawks were going to pull off the win when a shot from the Mountaineer's Kelsey Chapman tied the game at 2-2 in the 89th minute.

The first of two overtime periods produced no goals as each team tightened up their defense, and the goalkeepers found ways to stifle every shot. Both teams put up three shots in the first overtime period to no avail.

A second overtime period also ended scoreless, as the Crimson Hawk were unable to finish on any of their three shots. The game ended in a 2-2 tie; the first of the season for either team.

IUP, now 4-3-1 (3-3-1), will travel to Kutztown tomorrow to take on the Golden Bears at 1 p.m. The game will be the second of three straight road games as the Crimson Hawks will not play at home again until October 5.
