MANSFIELD, PA –
Darian Shuker (Reading, Pa./Exeter ) set a career-high with nine saves in the cage and the Crimson Hawks got goals from three different player as IUP defeated Mansfield 3-0 in conference field hockey action on Wednesday.
It was Shuker's third shutout in the Crimson Hawks' last four games as they improve to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). After dropping the first four games of the season, IUP has won four of its last five games is now sixth in the league standings. Mansfield falls to 2-7 overall and 2-5 in the PSAC.
In what would be a fairly even first half,
Sarah Zielinski (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) scored IUP's first goal of the game right before the half, connecting off a pass from
Haley Fidler (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) with less than five minutes to go before halftime.
The Crimson Hawks kept the momentum going in the second half, with
Chelsea Wanamaker (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) cleaning up a loose ball in front of the cage for her first goal of the season, putting IUP on top 2-0 less than five minutes into the half.
Jess Kida (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) then found
Tia Barndt (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) less than five minutes later for the final score of the game, with IUP taking a commanding 3-0 lead with over 25 minutes to go.
The Crimson Hawks owned the second half, outshooting Mansfield 11-4 and owning a 9-4 advantage on penalty corners.
IUP returns home to face Seton Hill during Homecoming on Saturday. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
