WEST CHESTER, PA –
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) posted 19 points and 10 boards as the IUP women's basketball team opened up its 2014-15 season with a 75-57 win over The University of the Sciences Friday night.
Stoner was a model of consistency Friday, finishing a sparkling 6-8 from the floor and 7-8 from the charity stripe in 30 minutes for the Crimson Hawks. Not to be outdone was senior
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep), who tipped off her season with a game-high 21 points on 7-15 shooting.
The game began with the Crimson Hawks and the Sciences scoring back-to-back, but IUP began to take off seven minutes into play when they were up 12-6. The team made it to 19 points before The Sciences scored again.
IUP went into the half leading 46-31, and held onto the lead the entire second half of play.
IUP tallied 21 points from the foul line out of 26 attempts, translating to 80.8 percent. A total 36 rebounds were recorded, nine offensively and 27 defensively.
In addition to Stoner and Stamp, other Crimson Hawks to help lead the team to victory were
Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana),
Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) and
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) Mathe earned 4 rebounds and nine points. Fairman added eight points to the board, followed by Stapleton with six.
The Crimson Hawks will continue the action at the Carol Eckman Memorial Tournament Saturday when they face Concordia (N.Y.) at 2:00 p.m.
