Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) reached 1,000 career points and helped the Crimson Hawks to an 83-43 win over visiting Ohio Valley in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday at the Kovalchick Complex.
Stamp hit the milestone with her second of two consecutive free throws with 9:41 to go in the second half. She becomes the 21st place in IUP women's basketball history to score 1,000 points in a career and the first since Sarah Pastorek reached the mark at the beginning of the 2012-13 season.
She finished the night with 28 points on 8-of-18 shooting, going 10-of-14 from the foul line with six rebounds and three steals in 26 minutes.
The Crimson Hawks start the season with a perfect 3-0 mark for the third consecutive season, and with their third straight blowout, have outscored opponents so far by a combined 92 points.
It was a rough start tonight for IUP, however, missing two of its first three shots, going 1-for-2 at the foul line and turning it over once in the first three-plus minutes of action. Down 6-3, the Crimson Hawks reeled off 10 straight points, including five off the hand of
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson), to take a 13-6 lead at the 15:12 mark.
Ohio Valley narrowed its deficit to five just a few minutes later, but the Crimson Hawks got their lead up to double-digits at 23-13 with a three-pointer by
Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic). IUP kept the lead in double-figures for most of the remainder of the half, heading into the locker room with a 32-19 lead.
Coming out of the break with 11 points, Stamp needed to score 16 in the second half to reach 1,000. After scoring three on free throws early, she went on a scoring binge with 14 consecutive points over a 4:21 span to reach the milestone. Needing 27 on the night, she sank free throws for her 26th and 27th points, giving the Crimson Hawks a 59-30 lead with under 10 minutes to play.
IUP would go on to outscore the Fighting Scots 24-14 down the stretch for the 40-point win.
Also coming up with a big second half was
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana), who scored all 11 of her points in the second 20 minutes, going 4-of-6 from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point range.
Two more IUP players reached double-figures in scoring on the night, including
Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) with 13 and Stoner with 12. Fairman also finished with five assists and five steals in 25 minutes while Stoner added five rebounds in 22 minutes of play.
Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) had a team-high six assists while Stapleton had five and Wareham added four. Altogether, the Crimson Hawks dished out 24 assists on 27 total baskets. IUP shot 42.2 percent (27-of-64) from the floor and 76.9 percent (20-of-26) from the foul line and forced Ohio Valley into 26 turnovers.
The Fighting Scots had two of their seven players reach double-figures in scoring, led by Gharmeera McCullers with 12.
The Crimson Hawks are back in action this weekend as they open up their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) schedule on the road at Seton Hill. Tipoff for the women's game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
