BLOOMSBURG, PA -
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) went 5-of-7 from behind the arc, and scored a game-high 17 points in 67-53 win over No. 17 Huskies Saturday in Bloomsburg. This win marks IUP's second victory over a top 25 team this season, including then-25th ranked Gannon earlier in December.
In addition to Stapleton, two other Crimson Hawks posted double-figures in scoring including
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) with 13 and
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) with 11. Close behind these three was
Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic), who added nine points of her own.
Stapleton began the scoring for IUP in the first minute of play with a three-pointer. Stoner then joined Stapleton on the scoreboard, and the pair led the team to a 19-16 lead over the Huskies.
Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center), Stamp and
Lisa Burton (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Penn Hills) all contributed to the score throughout the first 20 minutes, and the Crimson Hawks went into the half leading No. 17 Bloomsburg 32-30.
Immediately in the second half, the Huskies made it a tie game at 32 points each. Bloomsburg led the next eight minutes, but the Crimson Hawks took over again with 12 minutes to play. The team never looked back and soared into their 10th consecutive win of the season, giving them a 6-0 PSAC record.
As a team, IUP grabbed 14 steals in the 40 minutes, including four from
Zhane Brooks (Erie, Pa. /Villa Maria), and three each from Fairman, Wareham and Stoner. The Crimson Hawks also tallied a total 39 rebounds, with 28 coming from the defense.
From the foul line, IUP sunk 13-of-15 shots for a FT% of 86.7. From behind the arc, the Crimson Hawks earned a 3FG% of 38.5 compared to the Huskies 11.8. In addition to high-scoring Stapleton, Stoner, Stamp and Wareham, Fairman and Brooks each posted seven points.
Seeing action off the bench were Wareham, Burton, Brooks and
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) who added a combined 19 points and nine rebounds to the board for IUP.
This game marks the Crimson Hawks' final matchup of 2014. The team will return to action January 3rd and 4th when they take place in PSAC crossover action against East Stroudsburg and West Chester. IUP will return to the Kovalchick Complex January 7th to host Cheyney. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
