WILLIAMSTON, NC –
Kyle Zaorski (Reading/Muhlenberg) struck out nine in seven innings as the IUP baseball team opened up its 2014 season with a 2-0 win over Millersville at Skewarkee Park.
The Crimson Hawks handed Millersville - which was ranked second in the latest regional poll - its first loss of the season as the Marauders fall to 4-1.
Getting the opening day start, Zaorski gave up just two hits, carrying a no-hitter through four innings. The hits he gave up were both singles coming in the fifth and seventh innings, as neither runner advanced past first in their respective innings.
The biggest threat the Marauders gave Zaorski was in the bottom of the first, drawing two walks and putting runners on first and second with just one down. Zaorski settled down, fanning a better for out two and getting the next batter to fly out to left.
The offense for the Crimson Hawks came from
Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) and newcomer
Jonathan O'Neill (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley). Lupia, who sat out all of 2013 with an injury, went 3-for-3 with an RBI single to right center in the eighth inning, driving home
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys).
That run made it a 2-0 game as IUP picked up its first run in the seventh when
Rick Jones (New Castle/Laurel) capitalized on a Millersville wild pitch, scoring from third. Jones had reached first on catcher's interference and advanced to third on a single by
Hunter Bigler (Washington/Trinity).
Austin Mock (State College/State College) entered in relief and tossed a perfect eighth inning, setting up Uhl for the save as he closed out Millersville in the ninth.
The Crimson Hawks totaled nine hits on the day and drew two more walks.
They return to the field tomorrow with a pair of games against Tiffin. Game one is currently set for 10 a.m. while the nightcap is scheduled for 5 p.m.
