Softball Splits Saturday Games at Shaw Tournament

RALEIGH, NC – The IUP softball team split its season-opening games on Saturday as they competed in Shaw University Softball Challenge.

The Crimson Hawks lost their first game 7-2 to West Virginia Wesleyan before rallying to defeat Chowan 12-9. They also held an 8-0 lead after two innings with Winston-Salem State before the game was suspended. It will not be made up.

Emily Hofman picked up the win against Chowan as Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) got the save. Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) went yard with her first homerun of the year while Rachel Francis (Jefferson, OH/Jefferson) went 5-for-5. Stefanie McCoy (New Paris/Chestnut Ridge), Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area) and Megan Gould (New Germany/Forest Hills) each had multi-hit games in IUP's three-run win.

Campbell took the loss in the opener to Wesleyan. Meghan Carney (Corry/Corry) knocked in both IUP runs; one on a base hit and another on a ground out.

Full box scores were not available.

The Crimson Hawks were set to play Tiffin in their opener, but weather and field conditions prompted makeshift changes as they instead played against Wesleyan in their first game of the 2014 season.

Sunday games at the Shaw Tournament for IUP include Columbus State at 11 a.m. and South Carolina – Aiken at 3 p.m. Aiken was an original opponent while Columbus State was changed on Saturday night.

These will be the final two games in North Carolina for the Crimson Hawks.
