Baseball Wins Riverside Classic Tournament with 3-1 Record

WILLIAMSTON, NC – The IUP baseball team finished up with a two-day sweep of Tiffin to win the Riverside Classic Tournament in Williamston, N.C. with a 3-1 overall record. The Crimson Hawks only loss was to LeMoyne as they also defeated Millersville this weekend.

The loss to LeMoyne came on Sunday morning as the Crimson Hawks fell by a score of 5-1. Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge) was responsible for IUP's only run, getting an RBI base hit in the ninth inning. Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys) went 2-for-4 in the game with a pair of singles and a walk.

Jared Weed (Washington Crossing/Council Rock North) got the start, going five innings while giving up five hits and two earned runs and striking out three. Demetrius Christofes (Grantville/Lower Dauphin) tossed three innings in relief, giving up five hits and one earned run.

IUP rebounded with a 3-1 win over Tiffin in the nightcap, as Kyle Zambanini (Jerome/Conemaugh Twp.) picked up the win by giving up just two hits and one earned run in six innings of work. He also struck out four batters. Zach Chinchilla (Ambridge/Quigley Catholic) relieved Zambanini, striking out five and giving up just two hits in three innings of work.

Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) scored two of the Crimson Hawks runs, finishing 1-for-3 from the plate. Uhl again went 2-for-4 with a single and an RBI double.

Hunter Bigler (Washington/Trinity) was the winning pitcher after throwing three relief innings in a 7-4 win over Tiffin on Monday morning. Bigler struck out three while giving up three hits and one earned run. Matt Douglas (Canonsburg/Canon-McMillan), Devin Doutt (Lower Burrell/Burrell), Tyler Squibbs (York/Donegal) and Austin Mock (State College/State College) all threw in relief as Mock picked up the save.

Tice finished 4-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Jonathan O'Neill (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley) went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a walk and an RBI and Mock also finished 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.

The Crimson Hawks opened up the season with a 2-0 victory over Millersville on Saturday.

They're scheduled to be back in action on Thursday and Friday with back-to-back doubleheaders against Wilmington in Flemington, N.J.
