Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge) totaled five hits but the Crimson Hawks could only score four total runs as IUP dropped a pair of games to 18th-ranked Wilmington (Del.) on Saturday afternoon at Harford Community College in Maryland.
The Wildcats took the opener, a nine inning game, 7-4 before winning game two 3-0 in seven innings.
The Crimson Hawks fall to 3-3 on the year and the Wildcats improve to a perfect 5-0.
Kyle Zaorski (Reading/Muhlenberg) started game one and took the loss, giving up five hits and five earned in 6.0 innings. He struck out four and walked two. Wilmington picked up two runs in the first inning but the Crimson Hawks tied the score in the top of the second on a two-run double by
John Beatty (New Castle/Mohawk).
The Wildcats went on top 5-2 in the sixth with three runs on three hits, including a two-run single. IUP made it one-run game in the eighth with a pair of runs, the first coming when Tice scored from first on a double to right center by
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys), who later scored on a double by
Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown).
Wilmington picked up a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to go on top by three. The Crimson Hawks put the tying run at the plate with two outs in the top of the ninth before Wilmington got the final out for the win.
Kyle Zambanini (Jerome/Conemaugh Twp.) went the distance for the Crimson Hawks in game two, striking out three but giving up eight hits and three earned.
Again, Wilmington scored in the opening inning, managing one run and one hit. The Wildcats got two more in the sixth for the 3-0 win.
The Crimson Hawks had plenty of chances, leaving at least one runner on base in each inning for total of 10 for the game. In the third,
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) and
Jonathan O'Neill (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley) led off with back-to-back singles before two straight flyouts and a strikeout ended the threat.
IUP got the first two on in the fourth with walks, but three consecutive outs again ended a great chance for the Crimson Hawks to get on the scoreboard.
The Crimson Hawks totaled 12 hits on the day and reached base 12 more times on walks. Tice went 3-for-4 in game one with a run scored and 2-for-3 in the second.
IUP is scheduled to play a doubleheader on Wednesday, traveling to Washington, Pa. to host Penn State Allegheny.
