Mock Helps Baseball to Twinbill Split with Millersville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILLERSVILLE, PA – Austin Mock (State College/State College) had four hits on the day and picked up the save in the opener as the Crimson Hawks split a pair of games with Millersville in PSAC crossover baseball action on Thursday.

Mock finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI in the first game, throwing the last two innings on the mound to preserve a 6-5 victory. Millersville got the win in game two by a score of 5-1.

The Crimson Hawks are now 5-7 overall on the year, going 2-1 against Millersville. The Marauders are 11-6.

IUP's win can be attributed to a five-run fourth inning after trailing by a score of 3-1. Mock started things off with a two-run double to leftfield, bringing around Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys) and Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown). Uhl had doubled to lead off the inning while Lupia was hit by a pitch.

Two batters later and still no outs, Scott Hess (Erie/Erie Cathedral Prep) smacked IUP's third double of the inning, scoring Mock and moving Tyler Mroz (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley), who had walked earlier, to third. Hunter Bigler (Washington/Trinity) and Chris Calliari (Brockway/Brockway) also brought home runs as the Crimson Hawks took a 6-3 lead.

The Marauders picked up one run in the fourth off starter Kyle Zaorski (Reading/Muhlenberg), who went five innings before giving way to Mock on the rubber. Millersville managed one run off of Mock in the fifth on a two-out single, but he avoided any more damage by getting the next batter to fly out to center.

It was an easier seventh for Mock, putting the Marauders down 1-2-3, getting the final batter of the game to strike out swinging as he picked up his third save of the season.

Zaorski picked up the win, giving up five hits and three earned runs while striking out six to move to 2-2 on the year. The Crimson Hawks were the first to score, as Calliari came around on a throwing error in the first inning. Millersville picked up a run to tie it in the bottom half and scored two more in the third to take that 3-1 lead.

The Marauders got all of their runs early in game two, putting one on the board in the first inning and getting four more in the second off of IUP starter Kyle Zambanini (Jerome/Conemaugh Twp.). The Crimson Hawks only run came in the fifth inning on a Jonathan O'Neill (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley) solo shot to left.

IUP is schedule to be back in action this weekend as the Crimson Hawks open up PSAC West play with a four-game set with Slippery Rock. Saturday's doubleheader will be played at Slippery Rock with IUP coming home for the first time all year for two games on Sunday. First pitch on both days is set for 1 p.m.
