Box Score 2 GREENSBURG, PA – The Crimson Hawks totaled four homeruns while allowing just three combined runs as IUP swept Seton Hill in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.
IUP won by scores of 2-0 and 9-3.
It was the first divisional action for the Crimson Hawks this season since having their previous three doubleheaders postponed due to weather. They improve to 8-4 overall and are 2-0 in the PSAC West. Seton Hill falls to 13-7 and 3-5.
The only action in the opener came with a pair of solo shots, the first coming off the bat of
Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area) in the opening inning.
Christi Mauk (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel) added hers in the fifth inning to close off the scoring.
Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) pitched seven strong innings in the start in the circle, getting her sixth complete game and first shutout of the season. She gave up just four hits and struck out two to improve to 3-2 on the season.
The Griffins did threaten in the third inning, loading the bases with two outs, but Campbell got out of the jam by forcing the groundout to end the inning.
Action heated up in game two, but first for Seton Hill as the Griffins plated three runs in the first inning off of IUP starter
Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral). Those would be the only runs for Seton Hill, however, as Spindler settled down and allowed just six base runners the rest of the game.
The Crimson Hawks scored their first run the following inning when
Mary Ward (Hatfield/North Penn) came around from second on an RBI single off the bat of
Meghan Carney (Corry/Corry). They got three more in the third when Ward blasted her third homer of the year, bringing in
Stefanie McCoy (New Paris/Chestnut Ridge) and
Rachel Francis (Jefferson, OH/Jefferson).
Ward picked up another RBI in the fourth on a run-scoring single. It was just one of four runs for IUP in that inning, as Francis and McCoy also brought around runs. IUP added one more in the sixth inning with the fourth homer of the afternoon, a solo shot by
Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area), also her third of the season.
Spindler picked up her second win of the season, giving up three earned on seven hits in the complete game.
Ward finished with three hits and four RBI on the day, while Mercer, Francis, Mitchell and Carney each had two hits.
The Crimson Hawks are back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Erie to face Gannon in a matchup that has been postponed and rescheduled four times since last week.
