Box Score 2 JOHNSTOWN, PA – The Crimson Hawks scattered 11 hits over two games but could only muster one run as they were swept by Pitt-Johnstown in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West baseball doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
UPJ took game one by a score of 2-0 while game two when to the Bobcats by a score of 5-1.
The losses for IUP break open a three-way tie for fourth place in the PSAC West, with the Crimson Hawks falling to 6-10 in the division while UPJ improves to 8-8. California (PA), the other team involved in the tie, split on Friday and is now 7-9 in the West.
Demetrius Christofes (Grantville/Lower Dauphin) got the start for IUP in game one, giving up just three hits and two earned runs over 4.0 innings to take the loss. He walked four and struck out three in falling to 1-1 on the season.
The Bobcats scored both runs in the fifth inning, getting to Christofes with a single and a walk to start the stanza.
Zach Chinchilla (Ambridge/Quigley Catholic) entered in relief, but UPJ picked up a pair of singles and another walk, scoring two runs but leaving the bases loaded.
The Crimson Hawks had a hit in each of the first three innings and a pair in the fourth, but had no runs to show for it. The two in the fourth came from Mike and
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown), as a back-to-back double and single put runners on second and third with one out. However, a sacrifice bunt attempt got Mike out at home and a fly out the following batter ended IUP's best threat of the game.
In game two, the Crimson Hawks capitalized on a UPJ error in the third to bring
Chris Calliari (Brockway/Brockway) around from first to tie the score at 1-1.
IUP managed just one more hit the rest of the way while the Bobcats had four hits and four runs to come away with the win.
Zach DeTillio (Pittsburgh/Seneca Valley) got the start for the Crimson Hawks, giving up seven hits and five earned over 5.2 innings.
IUP has two more games with the Bobcats tomorrow at Dougherty Field. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
