Jasa Mitchell Ties Softball Single Season Homerun Record in Loss to Cal

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

INDIANA, PA – Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) blasted her ninth homerun of the season, tying a program record, but IUP fell to rival California (PA) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West softball doubleheader on Saturday at Podbielski Field.

Cal took game one by a score of 5-2 before ending game two after just five innings with an 11-1 win.

The losses drop the Crimson Hawks to 14-10 overall and 7-5 in the PSAC West. The Vulcans improve to 17-4 and 10-0 in the division.

Mitchell's record-tying homer came in the opening inning of the first game, blasting a pitch over the fence in center field to bring around Christi Mauk (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel) from first. The runs, unfortunately, were the only two of the game for the Crimson Hawks.

It was also the 22nd roundtripper of her career, tied for fourth all-time.

The Vulcans tied the game in the third and took the lead in the fourth with an RBI double to go on top 3-2. They added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh on a double and a groundout.

IUP had runners in scoring position just two more times after the first, but weren't able to capitalize on either opportunity.

Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) took the loss in the circle to fall to 5-6 on the year, giving up eight hits but just one earned run on the day.

The Vulcans dominated game two, getting three runs in the second before exploding for eight in the fourth. They totaled nine hits in the nightcap, including two homers and a pair of doubles. IUP's only run came in the fifth when Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area) singled to right, bringing home Meghan Carney (Corry/Corry).

The Crimson Hawks totaled eight hits on the afternoon while Cal had 17. Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral) picked up just her second loss of the season, falling to 6-2 on the year.

IUP is back in action tomorrow when the Crimson Hawks travel to Edinboro to play the Fighting Scots in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
