Box Score 2 EDINBORO, PA – Led by
Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area)'s 10th homer of the year, which broke an IUP single-season record, and
Stefanie McCoy (New Paris/Chestnut Ridge)'s seven RBI, the Crimson Hawks swept Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West foe Edinboro Sunday afternoon.
Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) shutout the Fighting Scots in game one 9-0 in just six innings. The Crimson Hawks then went on to claim the 7-2 victory in game two.
In the first game, McCoy led the way with five RBI, collecting three hits off of four at bats including a homer. She got the Crimson Hawks on the board to kick off the first inning, singling up the middle and sending
Christi Mauk (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel) home.
McCoy would advance to second on the throw and Mitchell would score, giving the Crimson Hawks the 2-0 advantage.
Mary Ward (Hatfield/North Penn) brought McCoy home, ripping a single to center field. In the next at bat,
Angela Devereaux (Oakdale/West Allegheny) reached on an error by the third baseman, scoring Ward.
In the third inning, a single from Devereaux would bring home
Allison Viguers (West Chester/West Chester East) to give IUP the 5-0 lead.
McCoy added two more RBI in the fourth inning, sending another single up the middle to bring home
Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area) and
Emily Hofmann (Dublin/Pennridge), giving the Crimson Hawks the seven-run lead.
She sealed the game in the sixth inning with a two-run homerun to left field. The Fighting Scots stranded two in the bottom half of the sixth, with Campbell striking out three of the five batters, to end the game.
McCoy finished the game going 3-of-4 with five RBI and two runs scored. Ward went 2-of-3 with one RBI and one run scored while Mitchel was 1-of-3 with a double and a run scored.
Campbell tossed the complete game shutout, giving up just four hits and two walks while striking out seven. She improves to 6-6 on the season.
In game two, both teams were held off the scoresheet through three innings of play, with Edinboro pitcher Kalet Lenart tossing a no-hitter through the first 11 batters.
In the top of the fourth, Mitchell broke up the scoring and made IUP history, sending a solo shot to left field. The homer was her 10th of the season, setting an IUP single-season record. She leads the conference in homers, three ahead of Seton Hill's Carlee Wickstrom.
The Fighting Scots, however, responded, when Brooke Callaghan sent a two-run shot to left field, giving Edinboro their first lead of the afternoon.
Down 2- in the sixth, McCoy picked up right where she left off, doubling to left center to bring in Mitchell and Mauk. Later in the sixth,
Meghan Carney (Corry/Corry) reached base on an error by the third baseman, advancing Laruen Hogue to third and bringing McCoy home.
IUP would add another run in the sixth when Devereaux reached on an error by the shortstop, bringing Hogue around.
Ward added an insurance run for the Crimson Hawks in the seventh when she flied out to centerfield, allowing Hofmann to score on the throw.
McCoy finished game two 1-of-2 with two RBI, two walks, two runs scored and a double. Mitchell recorded the Crimson Hawks' only other RBI, finishing the game 2-of-3 with one RBI, two runs scored, one walk and a homerun.
Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral) earned her seventh win of the season, pitching 6.0 innings, giving up just five hits, two runs and three walks, while striking out four. Campbell came in to pitch the final inning, walking one and striking out one.
With the wins, the Crimson Hawks improve to 16-10 on the season, in second place in the PSAC West. They'll return home for a doubleheader with Gannon on Tuesday and will follow that up playing host to Edinboro for a rematch of Sunday's games with a doubleheader on Wednesday.
Tuesday's first pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. from Podbelski Field.
