Box Score 2 INDIANA, PA – A walk-off RBI single by
Jonathan O'Neill (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley) gave the Crimson Hawks a game one win as they totaled 21 hits in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West doubleheader split with Gannon on Friday afternoon at Dougherty Field.
The Crimson Hawks took game one by a score of 10-9 in eight innings before falling 8-5 to the Golden Knights in game two. IUP moves to 13-20 overall on the season and 7-13 in the PSAC West. Gannon 13-24 and 9-13.
O'Neill's game-winning hit came with one out, scoring
Austin Mock (State College/State College) from third. Mock had led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on sacrifice bunt by
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys). He moved up one more base on a wild pitch, setting up the easy score.
Zach Chinchilla (Ambridge/Quigley Catholic) picked up the win in relief, despite giving up three runs in 2.2 innings of work. He gave up all three earned runs in the seventh as Gannon tied the score at 9-9 to take the game to extra innings. Gannon then put runners at the corners with two outs in the eighth, but Chinchilla ended the threat by forcing a fly out, setting up the final at bat.
Hunter Bigler (Washington/Trinity) had three of IUP's 11 hits in the game, with
Chris Calliari (Brockway/Brockway) and
Rick Jones (New Castle/Laurel) each getting a pair. Calliari, O'Neill, Jones, and
John Beatty (New Castle/Mohawk) all had two RBI.
The Crimson Hawks scored five in the first, one in the second and three more in the fifth to take a 9-5 lead. Gannon came back with one in the sixth before the three tying runs in the seventh.
IUP raced out to a 3-0 lead in game two on the strength of a solo homer and RBI base hit by
Austin Mock (State College/State College). The Golden Knights scored in each of the next four innings, including three in the fourth, to go on top 7-3.
The Crimson Hawks came back with two in the sixth to make it a 7-5 ballgame, but Gannon scored an insurance run in the seventh and got a 1-2-3 bottom half to secure the win.
Zach DeTillio (Pittsburgh/Seneca Valley) was given the loss, falling to 3-4 on the season after giving up four earned in 4.1 innings of work. The Crimson Hawks totaled 10 hits, with two each coming from Mock, Beatty and Jones.
IUP will head up to Erie to finish the series with the Golden Knights on Saturday. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
