Softball’s Win Streak Now at Eight after Sweep at Clarion

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLARION, PA – The Crimson Hawks totaled 25 hits and nearly pulled out two shutout wins as they swept Clarion in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) softball doubleheader on Friday.

IUP picked up a 6-0 game one win and a 10-1 victory in game two. Stefanie McCoy (New Paris/Chestnut Ridge) had three of the Crimson Hawks' eight hits in the opener, driving home two runs while scoring two more. Angela Devereaux (Oakdale/West Allegheny) went 4-for-5 in the nightcap, driving in two runs.

Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) improved to 9-6 with her 14th complete game and fourth shutout of the season in game one. She struck out six and gave up just three hits in seven innings of work. She had three 1-2-3 innings and only allowed one runner reach second base.

Game one was scoreless until the sixth, when back-to-back doubles by Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) and McCoy scored the game's first run. McCoy would then score on an RBI single by Mary Ward (Hatfield/North Penn) to give IUP a 2-0 lead. The Crimson Hawks then exploded for six more in the seventh, capitalizing on three Clarion errors.

That momentum carried into game two with the Crimson Hawks scoring three runs in each of the first two innings. Ward, Devereaux and Allison Viguers (West Chester/West Chester East) each tallied run-scoring base hits in the first two innings as IUP totaled seven hits.

The Crimson Hawks scored one more in the sixth on an RBI single by Devereaux and three in the seventh, including a run-scoring single by Megan Gould (New Germany/Forest Hills) to build a 10-0 lead. Clarion managed a single run in the bottom half of the last inning to break up the shutout.

Three different pitchers contributed to the win for the Crimson Hawks, combining to give up just four hits and walk one. Tara Senn (Eagle/Downington East) was credited with the win, her first of the year, after giving up just one hit and no runs in four innings of work. Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral) and Emily Hofman tossed the other three innings, giving up three hits.

Madi Derr (Lancaster/Warwick) and Kaylee Prendergast (West Chester/Villa Maria Academy) each had two hits while Ward knocked in two runs.

The wins were the eighth straight for the Crimson Hawks as they improve to 22-10 overall and 15-5 in the PSAC West. They'll wrap up a four-day stretch that included four doubleheaders tomorrow when they host Seton Hill at Podbielski Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
