Box Score 2 ERIE, PA – After four schedule changes, the IUP softball team headed to Gannon and returned home with a pair of victories over their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival.
IUP dominated in the first game, winning 6-2. They come back strong in the second, holding off a late rally from the Golden Knights to claim the 4-2 victory.
The games, which were originally scheduled March 26 but had to be rescheduled three times due to poor weather conditions, saw seven different Crimson Hawks record RBIs.
In the first game, IUP got on the board early on, when
Allison Viguers (West Chester/West Chester East) singled through the left side, scoring
Stefanie McCoy (New Paris/Chestnut Ridge), who had reached on a double and advanced to third following a ground out from
Christi Mauk (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel).
The Crimson Hawks extended their lead even more in the third, plating four runs off of four hits and one error.
Megan Gould (New Germany/Forest Hills) started things off for the Crimson Hawks in the third, reaching on an error by the shortstop.
Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area) would reach on a fielder's choice as Gould was called out a second. Mercer then stole second and reached third on a sacrifice flyout from
Rachel Francis (Jefferson, OH/Jefferson).
That's when the IUP offense ignited, as
Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) doubled down the leftfield line, scoring Mercer. A single from
Mary Ward (Hatfield/North Penn) scored Mitchell in the next play.
Ward advanced to third after McCoy singled and advanced to second on the throw.
A single from Mauk, who was called out at second, brought in McCoy and Ward to end the inning.
Gannon plated their runs in the fourth, cutting the IUP lead to 5-2.
In the top of the fifth, Mauk brought in her third runner of the game, scoring Francis.
That's how the final score would read, as the Crimson Hawks defeated Gannon 6-2 in the first game.
Mauk finished game one going 2-of-4 with three RBI. Mitchell was also 2-of-4, adding one run scored and one RBI. McCoy was an impressive 2-of-3 with two runs scored.
Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) got her fourth win of the season, pitching a complete game. Improving to 4-2, she allowed just three hits and two earned runs, walking two and striking out four.
In the second game, it was the Golden Knights who got on the scoresheet first, scoring on just their third at bat of the game to take the 1-0 lead.
The Crimson Hawks responded in the top of the second, as Megan Carney doubled to left center, scoring McCoy who had singled to start off the inning.
IUP kept the pressure on in the third, as Merer launched a solo homerun to right center to give the Crimson Hawks the 2-1 advantage.
The scoring would cool off for a majority of the game, until IUP plated two more runs in the sixth. In the game's second homerun, Mauk sent a ball to deep left field, giving IUP the two-run lead.
Carney would double in the following at bat and
Madi Derr (Lancaster/Warwick) entered the game as a pinch runner. Viguers grounded out to the second baseman, advancing Derr to third. With a 2-2 count,
Kaylee Prendergast (West Chester/Villa Maria Academy) singled to left center, bringing in Derr and giving the Crimson Hawks the 4-1 lead.
The Golden Knights would add another run in the bottom of the seventh, but would leave two runners on base as the Crimson Hawks claimed the 4-2 victory.
In game two, Mauk was 1-of-2 with a homerun while Mercer was 1-of-3 with a homer. Carney finished the evening going 2-of-3 with an RBI, while Prendergast went 1-of-3 with an RBI.
Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral) pitched a beauty for IUP, going all seven innings and allowing just six hits and two earned runs. She did not allow a walk and struck out one batter.
With the wins, the Crimson Hawks improve to 10-4 on the season, extending their win-streak to four.
They will continue their road trip on Friday, heading to Slippery Rock for a doubleheader with rival Slippery Rock at 2:30 p.m. They'll return home Saturday to host Mercyhurst in a doubleheader slated to being at 1 p.m.
