Baseball Celebrates Senior Day with 39 Runs in Sweep of Clarion

INDIANA, PA – IUP put together 39 runs on 34 hits, allowing just six earned runs on the day as the Crimson Hawks celebrated baseball Senior Day with a doubleheader sweep of Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Dougherty Field.
 
13 different IUP players had a hit, including five players with at least four hits in the sweep. The Crimson Hawks took game one 22-4 and game two 17-3.
 
11 of IUP's 34 hits were extra bases with six doubles, two triples and three homeruns. Two of those round trippers came off the bat of
(St. Marys/St. Marys)
and Martin each brought in two runs on singles and Mock scored another two with a triple. Lupia and Rick Jones (New Castle/Laurel) also had RBI singles in the sixth to close out the scoring.
 
Devin Doutt (Lower Burrell/Burrell) closed out the game in the seventh, striking out all three Golden Eagles batters he faced for the 18-run win.
 
The Crimson Hawks jumped all over Clarion in the first inning of game two, putting up 12 runs all with two outs. 16 batters stepped to the plate in the inning which featured nine hits, including an Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) double and a Tice homerun. Martin also had two run-scoring hits.
 
Clarion's runs came in the second and fourth, with IUP also scoring three in between with RBI hits from Tice and Lupia. The Crimson Hawks closed out the scoring with two more runs in the fifth with a Tice double and an RBI groundout by Mock.
 
Mock and Lupia each had five hits on the day and combined for nine runs. Mock went 5-for-8 with a double, triple, five RBI and five runs. Lupia also went 5-for-8 with three doubles, six RBI and four runs scored.
 
Uhl and Tyler Squibbs (York/Donegal) each pitched an inning of relief, tossing two shutout innings with Uhl striking out a pair. Squibbs closed out Clarion 1-2-3 in the seventh.

In between games, IUP honored seven of its graduating seniors, including Squibbs, Christofes, Doutt, Lupia, Kyle Zambanini (Jerome/Conemaugh Twp.), Nolan Schaaf (Reedsville/Indian Valley) and Jared Weed (Washington Crossing/Council Rock North).
 
The Crimson Hawks improve to 16-23 overall on the year and 10-16 in the PSAC West. Clarion falls to 8-28 and 5-21.
 
Both teams close out their seasons tomorrow with a doubleheader at Clarion. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
