Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, PA – The Crimson Hawks couldn't get their bats going at the right time as IUP dropped both ends of a baseball doubleheader against California (PA) on Sunday afternoon. The Vulcans were victorious 5-1 in game one and 8-1 in game two.
IUP falls to 11-14 overall while Cal is now 16-12. Both teams now hold identical divisional records of 5-7 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West, tied for fifth.
The Crimson Hawks outhit Cal 8-6 in the opener, but they scattered those across the seven innings. Their one run didn't come until the fifth inning, when
Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge) smacked a two-out double down the left field line, scoring
Rick Jones (New Castle/Laurel) from second.
The Vulcans scored all five of their runs in the third and fourth innings, and all of them came with two outs in those innings. They took the initial lead with one run in the third and then brought around four on four hits in the fourth.
IUP pitchers walked nine batters in the first game, but only one of those ended up scoring. Kyla Zaorski took the loss and falls to 2-4 on the year after giving up five earned in 4.2 innings.
In game two, Cal again scored all of its runs in two innings, picking up two in the first and six more in the fifth. IUP scattered three hits through six innings before plating one in the seventh after a pair of errors by the Vulcans.
Four Crimson Hawks combined to give up nine hits and eight earned runs.
Zach DeTillio (Pittsburgh/Seneca Valley) started and got the loss, falling to 3-2 on the year.
Tomorrow's home doubleheader against Cal, which was already postponed from Saturday, has been pushed back again due to impending rain and will now be played on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
