Softball’s PSAC Tournament Run Ends with 3-2 Loss to Cal; IUP Now Awaits Word from NCAA

Box Score

QUAKERTOWN, PA – Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) blasted her fourth homerun of the tournament, but the solo shot couldn't generate enough offense as IUP fell to rival California (PA) 3-2, bowing out of the 2014 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Softball Championships on Saturday afternoon.

The loss came after three consecutive elimination game victories for the Crimson Hawks, who came within one game of advancing to the championship against Shippensburg.

Mitchell's homer led off the top of the sixth inning as the Crimson Hawks tied the score at 1-1. Five batters later Meghan Carney (Corry/Corry) singled to right field, bringing around Madi Derr (Lancaster/Warwick) from second, who had been pinch running for Angela Devereaux (Oakdale/West Allegheny).

That 2-1 lead for IUP wouldn't last long, as Cal tied things up on the bottom half with a two out RBI single.

Mitchell was intentionally walked in the seventh, but three other IUP batters couldn't get a rally going as the Crimson Hawks came out scoreless. IUP starter Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) forced the first two Vulcans' batters to groundout, but a single followed by a steal put a runner in scoring position with two outs. The following batter singled up the middle, scoring the runner and ending the game.

The Crimson Hawks finished with seven hits on the day, including two from Christi Mauk (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel). Campbell went 6.2 innings, giving up nine hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out two. She falls to 15-9 on the year.

The homerun was also Mitchell's 15th of the season, extending her school record, and also tied the career mark with her 28th.

The Crimson Hawks entered the PSAC championships ranked eighth in the NCAA Atlantic Region. The top eight teams in each region advance to the NCAA championships, with the selection show being broadcast live on Monday, May 5 at 10 a.m. on NCAA.com.

IUP is currently 32-15 overall.
