INDIANA, PA – Three goals by Bloomsburg in an eight minute span proved to be the difference as ninth-ranked IUP fell to the sixth-ranked Huskies 4-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) field hockey action on Saturday at Miller Stadium.
The goals came at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second with the Huskies using those to take control of the game. The Crimson Hawks fall to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC while Bloomsburg improves to 2-2 and 1-1.
The first half featured excellent defense from both teams, as neither was able to get a clean shot at the goal until
Casey McGowan (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) took a chance off of a penalty corner nearly 27 minutes into the game.
Jess Kida (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) had another shot for IUP just moments later, but it was saved by Bloomsburg's Lindsay Cassel, one of her six on the day.
The Huskies got on the board just before halftime, knocking a loose ball into the cage just four seconds before the horn sounded.
Bloomsburg kept it going in the second half, getting a pair of goals in the first 7:55 to take a 3-0 lead.
The Crimson Hawks' offense pushed down the field and moments later got on the board with a goal off of a spin move from
Tia Barndt (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia), her first career score.
IUP's defense clamped down and allowed just one more Bloomsburg shot, although that ended up being a goal as the Huskies took a three goal lead with 16 minutes to. IUP did get off five more shots but none connected as time ran out.
Darian Shuker (Reading, Pa./Exeter ) picked up four saves in the cage for the Crimson Hawks and
Ericka Griffith (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) picked up her second assist of the season on Barndt's goal.
It's a quick turnaround for the Crimson Hawks, who host Limestone (3-0) on Sunday at noon.
