INDIANA, PA - Goals by
Ericka Griffith (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and
Gabriela Feaser (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), and a strong defensive performance by
Darian Shuker (Reading, Pa./Exeter ) helped the Crimson Hawks clinch their first win of the 2014 season Sunday when they defeated Lindenwood 2-1.
It was a tight game and a defensive battle with each team recording only eight shots on goal throughout the competition.
IUP struck first just two minutes into the game when Griffith scored from a scramble in front of the cage. Recording only two shots in the first half, the Crimson Hawks went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Eleven minutes into the second half,
Casey McGowan (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) sent Feaser a wrap-around pass, and Feaser hit it into the cage for IUP's second goal. Despite their efforts, this was their last goal of the game, but it was enough to secure their win.
Lindenwood finally responded with a goal in the 55th minute of play, leaving IUP with a one point lead.
Shuker played the full game and recorded seven total saves, her highest amount of the season. Other Crimson Hawks contributing shots to Sunday's game were
Tia Barndt (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia),
Chelsea Wanamaker (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley), McGowan,
Haley Fidler (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood),
Jess Kida (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley),
Amber Bailey (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) and
Haley Klinger (Lancaster, Pa./Garden Spot).
IUP sees their next competition Saturday, Sept. 27, when they play host to Kutztown at 11:00 a.m. at George P. Miller Stadium.
