INDIANA, PA - The IUP women's field hockey team won their second consecutive game 2-0 Saturday against Kutztown. Not only was this their second win, but their first shutout of the 2014 season.
The Crimson Hawks defensively owned the first half of the game with the Golden Bears recording zero shots throughout the full 35 minutes. Despite IUP keeping possession of the ball a majority of the first half, and attempting three shots, they were unable to score. Both teams went into the half with no points on the board.
Fourteen minutes into the second half,
Tia Barndt (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) scored the first goal of the game for the Crimson Hawks. Her goal was assisted by Jessica Kida, and came off one of IUP's 15 recorded corner kicks.
With less than fifteen minutes to play, IUP attacked again when a shuffle in front of the cage led to a goal by
Haley Fidler (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood), assisted by
McKenzie Noll (Lewisburg, Pa./Mifflinburg). This was Fidler's first goal of the season, and strengthened the Crimson
Hawk's lead to 2-0.
Kutztown tried to get onto the board with three shots in the second half, but were unable to get past the IUP defense and IUP goalkeeper,
Darian Shuker (Reading, Pa./Exeter ).
Other Crimson Hawks to take action on goal were
Chelsea Wanamaker (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley),
Casey McGowan (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) and
Jess Kida (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley), who each recorded three shots throughout the 70 minutes of play.
This win improved IUP's record to 2-4, and dropped Kutztown's to 3-4. The Crimson Hawks will next see action when they travel to Slippery Rock for a 5 p.m. match Oct. 1. They will play two more games on the road before returning home to host Seton Hill Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
