The match was the final one of the season-opening Crimson Hawk Invitational, with IUP ending the weekend at 2-1.

The Crimson Hawks fell down by 12 in the opening set before going on an 8-2 run, but it was too little, too late as Malone took a seven-point victory.
IUP was a different team in the second set, scoring four of the game's first five points, including back-to-back kills by Kissell. Malone would battle back to make it a one-point game at 7-6, but the Crimson Hawks responded by reeling off six straight points to take a 13-6 lead. Another 6-0 run put them on top 20-10 before eventually winning by nine.
The third set was highlighted by an 8-0 run from the Pioneers, which gave them a 21-11 lead. IUP tried chipping away at the lead but it was already too much for the Crimson Hawks.
