No. 17 Women's Basketball Grabs 86-60 Victory over Edinboro

INDIANA, PA - Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson), Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) and Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) each posted double-figure points in No. 17 IUP's 86-60 victory over the Edinboro Fighting Scots, Wednesday at the Kovalchick Complex.  Stamp finished the night with 22 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.  Stoner tallied 19 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, while Stapleton added 12 points, one rebound and one assist.

This win came at the perfect time for the Crimson Hawks as they were coming off their first loss of the season to California (Pa.).  After Wednesday, IUP improved to 14-1 overall, 10-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).

The Fighting Scots opened the game with a quick 6-0 lead.  The Crimson Hawks didn't attack until almost two minutes into play when Stoner hit a jumper from the paint.  Edinboro, however, held onto their lead until there were just over nine minutes remaining in the half.  Zhane Brooks (Erie, Pa. /Villa Maria) sunk a shot from the field, giving IUP a 24-22 advantage.  For the rest of the half, the Crimson Hawks held onto their lead.

At halftime, IUP went into the locker room leading Edinboro 39-26.

Like many of their other games, the Crimson Hawks kicked it up a notch in the second half, and led by at least 10 points throughout the entire 20 minutes.

Starter Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) posted a season-high nine assists Wednesday in addition to her six points.  Coming off the bench for IUP, Brooks sunk her first career three-pointer in the first half of the game, adding to her game-total nine points.  Helping on all sides of the ball, Brooks also added seven rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Like last week's win against Cheyney, Wednesday's victory was a team effort with 12 Crimson Hawks seeing action on the court and posting points.

As a team, IUP shot 55.9% from the field, sinking 33-of-59 shots.  From the foul line, the Crimson Hawks earned 13-of-18, including five from Stoner and three more from Stamp.

Overall, the team grabbed 39 rebounds; 30 of them being on the defensive end.  In addition, IUP recorded seven steals and five blocks.

Saturday, the Crimson Hawks will travel to Slippery Rock for a PSAC West matchup.  Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
