INDIANA, PA –
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) and
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) each finished the night with double-figures in points and rebounds to help lead the No. 5 Crimson Hawks to a 71-56 victory over Seton Hill, Saturday at the Kovalchick Complex.
For Stoner, this was her second consecutive double-double, her fourth of the season. She finished the night as the team's high scorer with 17 points, in addition to her 15 rebounds.
This was Stamp's seventh double-double of the season, as she ended the game with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Stoner hit the first points of the night with a layup in the paint just seconds into play. From there, however, the first half was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams. The Griffins led for a majority of the first half, with the Crimson Hawks shooting only 10-of-32 from the field and 2-of-16 from behind the arc.
IUP kicked it into gear in the final minutes of the half, and went into the locker room leading Seton Hill 32-28.
The second half was more familiar for the Crimson Hawks, as they lead the entire 20 minutes, leaving out about 20 seconds when the game was tied. Stamp and Stoner, in addition to two other IUP players who finished with double-digit points, pushed the Crimson Hawks to the final score.
Saturday's win over the Griffins improved IUP's overall record to 18-1, 14-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Currently, the Crimson Hawks sit in first place in the PSAC Western Division, as well as the D2SIDA Atlantic Region Poll.
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) finished the night with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists, her ninth time this season scoring in double-digits.
Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) also had a successful night with 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Alexis Aiken (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Allegheny) saw 15 minutes off the bench for IUP, and posted five points, in addition to her three rebounds. Starter
Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) tallied a season-high nine rebounds, plus seven points and four assists.
The Crimson Hawks return to action Wednesday, February 4, when they face California (Pa.). The Vulcans currently sit in second place in the PSAC West, and are responsible for IUP's one and only loss of the season. Tipoff at the Kovalchick Complex is set for 5:30 p.m.
