INDIANA, Pa. – Despite second-half goals by sophomore
Haley Klinger (Lancaster, Pa./Garden Spot) and freshman
Matti Reightler (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic), IUP couldn't overcome an early deficit, losing to No. 3 East Stroudsburg 3-2 Saturday afternoon in conference field hockey action.
The Warriors jumped out to a two-goal lead before halftime, with the latter goal coming just over a minute before the break.
IUP started its comeback in the 45th minute, when a penalty corner resulted in a pass from junior
Haley Fidler (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) to Klinger, whose sweeping goal from four yards away got the Crimson Hawks back in the game at 2-1. East Stroudsburg answered back with another goal about seven minutes later, taking a 3-1 lead.
However, the IUP offense started to get rolling. Sophomore
McKenzie Noll (Lewisburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) knocked a long pass from near the right sideline into the Crimson Hawks' offensive zone, where Reightler deflected the ball into the cage in the 56th minute.
IUP, which couldn't find the equalizing goal, dropped to 5-8 overall and 3-4 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play. East Stroudsburg moves to 12-2 and 7-0 in the conference.
IUP continues its season-ending homestand with five more games on the turf at Miller Stadium. Next up for the Crimson Hawks is a date with Bloomsburg Wednesday, with play set to begin at 4 p.m.
