INDIANA, Pa. - Behind efforts from its two senior starters, IUP returned to Memorial Field House and broke open a close game to roll to an 82-73 victory over East Stroudsburg Saturday.
With the win, IUP head coach
Joe Lombardi tied the school's record for all-time wins. Now in his 10th year at the helm of the Crimson Hawks, Lombardi's record sits at 206-79.
Guard
Brandon Norfleet (Virginia Beach, Va. /Landstown) had a game-high 23 points on 7-for-21 shooting and a 7-8 performance at the free throw line. Norfleet also added five assists and four rebounds, while forward
Devon Cottrell (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Gateway) battled foul trouble, but still found a way to put up 10 points and 11 rebounds, his first double-double of the season.
The first half was a back-and-forth contest, with IUP leading 27-23 after an East Stroudsburg 3-point play. IUP, kick-started by a Norfleet 3-pointer of his own, turned their four-point lead into a 17-point advantage in the final seconds of the first half.
In the second half, the Warriors tried to chip away at the IUP lead, but every run was answered by a Crimson Hawk basket as the teams traded scores for most of the half. IUP led by 12 with eight minutes remaining in the game, and East Stroudsburg got no closer than seven in the last five minutes of action.
Cottrell continued his progression as a vital part of the Crimson Hawks' roster, as the redshirt senior added a block and two steals to his stat line in his 29 minutes of playing time, just missing back-to-back games of 30-or-more minutes played.
Frontcourt mate
Tevin Hanner (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) scored nine points in just 13 minutes, while
Daddy Ugbede (Gardena, Calif./Serra) had 11 and five rebounds in 12 minutes, as both players had their playing time cut short because of foul trouble.
Dante Lombardi (Indiana, Pa./The Kiski School), in his second-straight start at the point guard position, played 36 minutes and made five 3-pointers en route to scoring 17 points. He also handed out five assists.
For the game, IUP shot 42.2 percent on 27-64 from the field and made 23-29 shots from the free throw line. The Crimson Hawks committed 10 turnovers, while forcing 17 from East Stroudsburg.  Â
Now 2-2 on the season, the Crimson Hawks have a chance to get back over the .500 mark Sunday against West Chester. Tipoff at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex is set for 3 p.m.
