JOHNSTOWN, PA - Backed by
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) recording a season-high 32 points, the No. 9 Crimson Hawks cruised by the Pitt-Johnstown Lady Cats 88-56 Saturday in Johnstown.
The day was full of season-bests for the Crimson Hawks. In addition to her 32 points, Stamp also posted a season - and career-high eight steals, plus six boards and two blocks.
Zhane Brooks (Erie, Pa. /Villa Maria) saw her first season start Saturday against the Lady Cats, where she finished the day with a season-high 17 points and 12 rebounds, her first double-double of the year.
This victory improved IUP's record to 23-2, 19-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Going into Saturday's matchup, the Crimson Hawks sat in second place in the PSAC Western Division, just behind California (Pa.) who handed IUP their two losses of the season. Earlier this week against Slippery Rock, the Crimson Hawks secured a bye in the first round of the PSAC tournament.
Like many of their other games this season, the No. 9 IUP team led their opponent throughout a large majority of the game. Pitt-Johnstown scored first, taking an early lead, but the Crimson Hawks got it back just a few minutes into the game, and held onto it throughout the remainder of the matchup.
By the half, IUP had a strong 43-24 lead.
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) finished Saturday's matchup with 11 points, after shooting 57.1% from the field.
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) posted eight points for the Crimson Hawks, in addition to her eight rebounds. Following Stoner were
Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) and
Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic) with seven points each.
As a team, the Crimson Hawks shot 50% from the field after sinking 36-of-72, with seven coming from the long range. The Lady Cats finished the game with 26 total turnovers, giving IUP the opportunity to score 30 of their points.
Earlier this week, the first Division II NCAA Regional Rankings were released, placing the Crimson Hawks at third. These rankings will later determine the eight teams from each region that make the field of 64.
Wednesday, IUP will return to the Kovalchick Complex to host Clarion for Senior Night. The team will recognize seniors Stoner, Stamp, Mathe,
Lisa Burton (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Penn Hills) and
Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center). Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
