IUP Ranks Third in PSAC in GPA; Women’s Volleyball Earns Top Team Award

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The IUP women's volleyball team was honored by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) as the winner of the league's Top Team GPA Award for the 2014-15 academic year.

The awards, released at the conclusion of the academic year, honor the teams with the top cumulative team grade point average in each of the sponsored sports within the PSAC. The league hosts 23 championships, however, for the award purposes, indoor and outdoor track & field are counted as a single sport.

IUP's women's volleyball team boasted a cumulative grade point average of 3.759 for the year, which was also the third highest single team GPA in the entire conference. It's the first PSAC Team GPA Award for women's volleyball and sixth overall for IUP since the awards began at the conclusion of the 2011-12 year.

In addition to women's volleyball, 12 teams ranked in the top five in the conference, with eight holding onto one of the top three spots in their respective sports.

Men's and women's swimming each ranked second with respective GPA's of 3.062 and 3.488. The women's track & field team was also second with a GPA of 3.409. Five teams ranked third in their sport, including baseball (3.216 GPA); women's basketball (3.428); men's cross country (3.448); women's cross country (3.602); and men's track & field (3.155).

As an institution, IUP finished third out of 18 conference schools as Crimson Hawks student-athletes tallied a 3.287 GPA for the year. Seton Hill led all schools with a 3.442 while Mercyhurst was second with a 3.359 cumulative GPA.

The Team GPA Awards come after the PSAC announced its Scholar-Athletes for the 2014-15 year, as 178 IUP student-athletes were honored. In addition, three Crimson Hawks earned PSAC Top 10 awards during the season, including Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) in the spring and Yuri Fernandes (Brazil) and Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) in the winter. Also, three IUP student-athletes were named PSAC Champion Scholars this past year, including Timko for women's tennis, Anthony Rocco (Northern Cambria, Pa. /Northern Cambria) for men's basketball, and Alexander Hampel for men's cross country.
