Field Hockey Gets Third win of Season with Shutout at Mansfield

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Freshman Matti Reightler (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) scored two goals for the Crimson Hawks as IUP defeated Mansfield 2-0 in conference field hockey action on Wednesday evening.

IUP improves to 3-2 overall with the victory and 1-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Mansfield falls to 0-7 and 0-1.

The Crimson Hawks' offense was a force for the entire 70 minutes, putting up 24 total shots, including 18 shots on goal. It was most shots in a game for the Crimson Hawks since finishing with 29 total shots in a 4-2 win at Kutztown in 2013.

IUP controlled the ball for much of the game, also totaling 14 penalty corners.

Even with the Crimson Hawks' nine shots in the first half, the game remained scoreless at the break thanks to Mansfield goalie Laura Lawson and her seven saves. She would end the game with 16.

Reightler finally put IUP on the board in the 52nd minute, putting her first goal past Lawson with an assist from junior Ericka Griffith (Lititz, Pa./Warwick). Sophomore Brittany Thornton (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) then found Reightler for goal number two as she beat Lawson to the left to give the Crimson Hawks a 2-0 lead with just over five minutes to play.

The IUP defense gave up just two shots the entire game, with freshman Olivia Accardi (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) saving both to post her first career shutout.

The Crimson Hawks return to the field this weekend to host No. 3 Shippensburg on Saturday and Bellarmine on Sunday.
