INDIANA, Pa. – IUP junior field hockey midfielder
Amber Bailey (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) scored her first career goal Sunday, but an early deficit was too much for the Crimson Hawks to overcome in a 2-1 loss to visiting Bellarmine.
The loss drops the Crimson Hawks to 3-4 overall. Bellarmine improves to 5-2.
On the Miller Stadium turf, both teams came out aggressively in this non-conference game. Bellarmine took an early lead in the 12th minute on a goal that came from a scramble in front of the IUP cage.
Bellarmine got on the board again in the 26th minute to take a 2-0 lead, with the scoreline holding as the two teams entered halftime. Coming out in the second half, the IUP offense started to get some traction and controlled the tempo.
The Crimson Hawks totaled 10 shots in the second half after having just one in the first, while also earning nine penalty corners. After one of those penalty corners, Bailey redirected a shot attempt into the back of Bellarmine's cage to get IUP back in the game.
However, IUP couldn't muster up an equalizing goal, as Bellarmine came away with the 2-1 victory. In goal,
Olivia Accardi (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) had a save, while
Ericka Griffith (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) tallied three shots, with two of those being on goal.
IUP returns to action for the first of four consecutive away games Tuesday at Seton Hill. Play is set to start at 4 p.m.
