Fidler Scores Twice, Including Once in OT in Field Hockey’s Comeback Win

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Haley Fidler (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) scored in the 88th minute, giving the IUP field hockey team an exciting 3-2 comeback victory in overtime over Newberry on Saturday afternoon.

Fidler scored twice on the day as the Crimson Hawks dominated offensively with a 24-6 shot advantage on the afternoon.

The junior midfielder scored the game's first goal with an unassisted score in the eighth minute. The IUP defense took over from there, limiting Newberry to just two first half shots as the Crimson Hawks went into the halftime with a 1-0 lead.

The Wolves (0-1) took advantage of their limited offensive looks early on in the second half, scoring goals in the 37th and 41st minutes to take a 2-1 lead over IUP.

Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks continued to keep control of the ball, putting up a total of 12 shots in the second half alone.

Sophomore Brittany Thornton (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) came through with the game-tying score, getting an unassisted goal – the first of her career – in the 53rd minute.

The game would go to overtime, where after 10 minutes of play, lightning strikes forced a delay of over 90 minutes. Teams would warmup and return to the field, but could not score in 15 minutes of the first extra period.

The second overtime lasted not even three minutes before Fidler hit the game-winner off of a corner taken by Amber Bailey (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra).

Facing just four shots on goal all day, junior goalie Alyssa Lerda (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) saved one shot in goal while sophomore McKenzie Noll (Lewisburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) tallied a defensive save in the cage.

The Crimson Hawks return to the field tomorrow as they battle eighth-ranked Limestone at 1 p.m.
