IUP Field Hockey drops 1-0 decision at No. 6 Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Senior goalie Alyssa Lerda (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) recorded three saves as the IUP field hockey team dropped a 1-0 decision to sixth-ranked Bloomsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play at Steph Pettit Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Crimson Hawks fall to 7-7 overall and 2-5 in conference action. Meanwhile, the Huskies improve to 11-5 overall behind a 5-3 mark in league play.

Bloomsburg struck for the game's only goal just minutes into the game as Sam Peters scored off a backhanded shot off a rebound at the 5:11-mark. IUP nearly answered when a shot from Kimberly Kelly (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan ) was saved in the 13th minute. Lerda kept it 1-0 when she made a save on Laura Gerhard at the 22:02-mark. With just minutes left in the first half Sarah Zielinski (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) had her shot saved by Bloomsburg goalie Lindsay Cassel.

In the second half Amber Bailey (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) took a penalty corner but the Crimson Hawks were unable to get a shot off at the 44:26-mark. Just over 10 minutes later Bailey attempted another penalty corner which eventually led to a shot from Selena West (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) being blocked in the 58th minute.

Bloomsburg held a 7-3 edge in shots as well as an 8-3 margin in penalty corners.

The Crimson Hawks continue PSAC play tomorrow when they host Slippery Rock at 1 p.m.
