West’s Late Goal Propels Crimson Hawks to 2-1 win over Slippery Rock

INDIANA, Pa. – Selena West (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) scored the go-ahead goal with less than two minutes remaining to help IUP field hockey topple Slippery Rock 2-1 in Sunday action at George P. Miller Stadium.

West's goal, her team-leading seventh of the season, came at the 68:11 mark on a penalty corner and was assisted by Madelyn Mullen (Chester Springs, Pa./Owen J. Roberts).

The shot was one of 21 on the day for the Crimson Hawks, who went on the offensive and peppered Slippery Rock all afternoon long to improve to 8-7 overall and 3-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).

IUP had 11 shots in the first half and 10 in the second, while also holding the advantage in penalty corners over The Rock, 11-to-1.

Sarah Zielinski (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) opened the scoring in the 16th minute with her third goal of the year. Slippery Rock (6-10, 3-5) tied things up with a goal in the 27th minute.

The win kept the Crimson Hawks one game back of Kutztown for the sixth, and final playoff spot, in the PSAC. IUP will host Kutztown (10-6, 4-4) on Saturday in the regular season finale.

Before that game, the Crimson Hawks will host Mansfield (2-14, 1-7) this Wednesday at 4 p.m.
