Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. –
Ted DeSanti (Erie/Erie Cathedral Prep) went 3-for-4 with a homerun and five runs batted in as the Crimson Hawks defeated the College of Saint Joseph 14-7 in the third place game at the 2016 Builder Invitational at War Memorial Stadium on Sunday.
DeSanti also had a double on Sunday and was named to the all-tournament team, helping IUP to a 3-2 record at the Apprentice School's annual invitational.
Hunter Bigler (Washington/Trinity) joined DeSanti on the all-tournament team.
Anthony Rigous (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) also homered, collecting three hits and driving in three runs as he helped lead an IUP offense that totaled 14 hits on the afternoon. A total of nine Crimson Hawks combined for those 14 hits, with
Cory Wheeler (Butler, Pa./Butler) getting two, including a double. IUP's 2-3-4 hitters
Chris Calliari (Brockway/Brockway),
Chris Schaedel (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) and
Wes Carson (Woodstock, Md./Marriots Ridge) also had doubles and scored a combined four runs.
The Crimson Hawks scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-3 lead and later battled back from a 7-4 deficit by scoring runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth seventh and eighth innings. IUP took a 9-7 lead in the fifth by plating four runs, and then added five insurance over the next three innings.
Freshman
Brian Albert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) picked up the win in relief as he entered in the fourth allowed two hits and no runs over 4.1 innings of work.
The Crimson Hawks improved to 4-5 overall with the win. They scored 51 runs during the weekend, including three games of at least 10.
IUP is back in action this weekend with a four-game set against Pikeville in Kentucky. The opening doubleheader is on Saturday, at 1 p.m.
